WP7. Integration, Validation and Demonstration


 


This work package will specify the architecture of the APPS system including the interfaces taking the integration as integral aspect of the architecture from the start, thereby reducing integration risks in the project. WP7 will moreover comprise for testing and evaluating the APPS system by implementing a validation framework and by evaluating the results from two demonstrator setups and testing those under real-life conditions.

 

 

Task 7.1: Developing validation scenarios for plug & play and system-of-systems approach

 

This task is to generate test cases for final validation and performance assessment of the proposed system. Test procedures and criteria will be defined to ensure that the final system and its components will fulfil its intended use when placed in the foreseen demonstrator sites. As part of this task the requirements will be reviewed to ensure that issues affecting testing will be identified and resolved.  Fundamentally, the quality in test procedures and selection of criteria will be of major importance when testing of the entire system will be done. This means that the system will be tested at the site of the end user under real-life conditions as well as on some other exposed places. The results from the testing scenarios will constitute a base for adjusting the system in order to ensure a high standard and reliability of the system.

 

 

Task 7.2: Demonstrator component testing and evaluation

 

This task involves the testing of individual important components that are essential for the demonstrator set-ups. For example, the audio, video, and other sensors object detection and behaviour analysis components are tested with e.g. illegal activity detection. The communication between subsystems is tested to work seamlessly and is able to adopt messages and data between subsystems. The visualization system for showing alerts and objects and their trajectories will also be tested.

 

 

Task 7.3: Demonstrator systems integration

 

In this task, the APPS system will be set up. The system will be devised and instantiated as two demonstrator platforms to evaluate the APPS methods and technology developed in the previous tasks, based on the two scenarios in this proposal. The integration of the developed sensors and components in WP3, WP4, WP5 and WP6 will be performed. In the integration task, the interfaces defined in the System Design Document of WP 2 will be utilized.

 

 

Task 7.4: Demonstrator 1 - build-up and coastal site testing

 

This task involves the build-up of a coastal site demonstrator aiming at e.g. illegal activity detection as described in the scenarios at beginning of the project proposal. The demonstrator will involve the use of multiple sensory systems, behaviour analysis and communication layers to highlight plug and play features and systems-of-systems validation. The possible demonstration place(s) and final scenario will be decided on the Validation Scenario Development task (Task 7.1) and in coordination with supportive end-users, like the Turkish Coast Guard Command and Republic of Turkey Ministry of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communication. The list may include detection of illegal activities such as illegal fishing or smuggling, detection of pirates approaching targeted vessels, or similar cases.

 

 

Task 7.5: Demonstrator 2 - build-up and harbour site testing

 

This task involves the build-up of a harbour-oriented demonstrator with denser vessel traffic and critical infrastructure such as oil storage platforms and pipelines. The demonstrator will feature multi-sensory systems, traffic behaviour analysis of multiple vessels and ships of varying sizes. Parts of critical infrastructures will be surveyed and visualized in a 3D model to improve situational awareness and taking actions smoothly and reliably. The final pilot application will be selected during the lifetime of the project in the Validation Scenario Development Task (Task 7.1).  The possible demonstration place will be decided in coordination with supportive end-users such as the Port of Rotterdam. The list may include detection of illegal activities such as illegal smuggling, vessel traffic management in a harbour port, protection of strategically important areas such as pipelines or similar cases.

In summary, within this task the deployment of integrated APPS components will be realized to the demonstration location and validation scenarios will be executed in order to demonstrate that APPS covers the functionalities as aimed at the proposal.  These activities will be performed jointly by APPS consortium, The result of these demonstration activities will be evaluated by the end users during the APPS demonstration.
