WP6. Communication

This Work Package is responsible for the communication layer and development of the APPS system, its objective is to provide all the networking mechanisms that will allow a reliable operation of the security application. It integrates a heterogeneous set of available access technologies and enables optimized and safe bi-directional communications between the various sensors and the mobile Post of Control. It capitalizes on diverse network resources, including satellite links, LTE or 3G cellular networks, TETRA radio, locally deployed Wi-Fi networks or other wired and wireless access technologies.  These resources will be used concurrently and efficiently in order to achieve a high performance of the APPS system. Accordingly, the main objectives of this work package are to

  • Design the networking mechanisms required to operate in APPS scenarios
  • Develop network elements to gather streams from multiple interfaces and merge them
  • Develop communication devices for delivery of live video streams with high quality

Task 6.1: Specifications of the communication sub-system

In this task, APPS partners will research the possible readily available communication solutions and standards, assess their strengths and vulnerabilities, and enhance selected standards to match the high performance and high resiliency requirements of APPS ecosystem. This communication sub-system will be required to operate over various wireless and wired links, multiple parallel links will be used if available to improve BW, delay and reliability.

Further, a specification for such a communications protocol(s) will be generated and disseminated after it has been proven successful in tasks 6.2, 6.3 and other work packages.

Task 6.2: End user and sensors communication devices

In this task, APPS partners will integrate the communication sub system specified in task 6.1 into existing and/or newly developed end user and sensor devices. Those devices, together with the networking components developed in task 6.3 could now be used to test the validity of the robust communication layer and help further progress it through iterative testing.

Task 6.3: Communication servers and networking components

In this task, APPS partners will integrate the communication sub system specified in task 6.1 into existing and/or new communication servers and networking components, these components, together with the devices developed in task 6.2 could now be used to test the validity of the robust communication layer and help further progress it through iterative testing.
